The very famous old Weimar Hall was replaced by a new building which includes a concert hall with 1200 seats, a lecture room with 240 seats and some conference rooms for up to 400 visitors. The new hall was opened in June 1999, the year in which Weimar became the "Cutural City of Europe". The first opening goes back to 1932, the 100th birthday after the death of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Since then, the hall and the City of Weimar suffered under the historical burden of the "Republic of Weimar", of Nazi regime and during the Russian occupation. For this marvellous city, the new hall had to fulfill many expectations such as concerts and congresses, and also for musicals... and jazz and pop. The architecture and interior design have set the frame for electro-acoustical installations, for loudspeakers hidden behind the sound-penetrating surfaces of the ceiling and walls as well as for interconnections within the new hall and to the adjacent conference building being built simultaneously. The sound system is part of an audio-video concept. The idea was to install a far-reaching Audio Routing System (ARS) in a modular configuration with Base-Stations or Mainframes (MF) for all in- and outputs. The sound of the system had to be superior both for speech and music. Calculations were carried out regarding the shape of the room, the reverberation times (RT) and the sound reflections (R) arriving from the walls and the ceiling. This paper describes the sound system with it's quality criteria. Decisions during the planning stage and different consequences due to changes during construction will be discussed. Some references to other similar designs and comparisons are included.
