Four-Color Calibration Method on Colorimeter for Color Correction of LCD Display

A liquid crystal display (LCD) uses the cold cathode fluorescent lamp inside the backlight module. Unfortunately, the radiation spectrum of the cold cathode fluorescent lamp is non-continuous. If LCD color calibration uses a tristimulus colorimeter, the metamerism effect will cause larger color difference using this kind of backlight module. Nevertheless, the display factories are unwilling to use the spectroradiometer to get high-resolution colorimetry but take more measurement time. In this paper, we propose a technology using spectroradiometer with 1 nm high resolution as reference standard to calibrate a low-cost tristimulus colorimeter by the four-color calibration method. Then a low-cost and high-speed tristimulus colorimeter can be used to calibrate the color of LCD. After using six commercial 17” LCD as testing samples, this method was improved having about half color difference reduction ability. By this method, the average color difference is less than 3 much better than traditional one with about 6.
