History and Future Prospects of Japan-China Collaboration in Cosmic- Ray Observations

It was 1957, the first delegations of Japanese Physicists visited to China by the invitation of Chinese Academy of Science. The heads of delegation was Prof. S.Tomonaga and Prof. S.Kikuchi. Numbers of the Japanese party were almost 20, including 4 cosmic-ray physicists of Y.Watase, Y.Sekido, Y.Fujimato and K.Kamata. They visited the institutions and Universities in Beijing and also high mountain cosmic-ray observatory at, Luo Xueshan, near Kunming, where the multi-plate and magnetic cloud chambers were operating for the studies of new particles. The delegations have discussed with Chinese scientists Zhang Wenyu, director general of IHEP and other excellent cosmic-ray physicists. I remembered that my friend Kamata-san was excited that the delegations were invited to the party of Zhou Enlai and General Peng Dehuai and have a time to talk with each other. The delegations appreciated the warm welcome by Chinese side, and were impressed very much about the efforts of Chinese scientists as well as the brilliant historical monuments of Ancient Palace and others. The detailed of this visit was reported by Kamata-san after he returned, and his report of 40 pages was recently found in the internal record for the Japanese Cosmic-ray community. I feel this is an important record as the archieves of the collaborative history between both countries, illustrating the status of physics and the social situation of China around 1957. Unfortunately Kamata-san has passed recently, and I am going to gift this copy to you during this meeting.
