Carbon based fuels have attracted interest for the application of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Compared with hydrogen fuel, carbon based fuels are more convenient and accessible in the current fuel systems. Increasing amounts of renewable methanol (Me), ethanol fuels have been produced from biomass, and a large reserve of methane are found in shale gas. SOFCs have exhibited high energy efficiency and can play an important role in reducing carbon dioxide emissions. However, carbon deposition on anode has been the major barrier for the direct utilization of carbon based fuels in SOFCs due to blocking the electrocatalytic active sites of anode catalysts. The study of carbon deposition mechanisms and the development of coke-free catalysts are crucial for the development of SOFCs for carbon-based fuel applications.
