Even a small amount of alkali or alkaline earth metals present in the feedstock greatly affects the product yield during biomass pyrolysis, yet the mechanism of action has not been determined. These metals, particularly sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, naturally occur in biomassand would be prohibitively expensive to remove from fuel feedstock. A better understanding of how these metals affect the thermal decomposition of biomass would aid in catalyst design and process optimization for production of liquid bio-oil. The bio-oil can be used in the manufacture of carbon-neutral energy and chemical feedstocks.
