Upgrading Maya heavy oil under medium pressure slurry conditions is presented. A comparison between the thermal and catalytic process was made in batch slurry reactors using ammonium heptamolybdate as catalyst precursor. The product fractions were characterized by thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and ASTM standards. It was found that the use of the dispersed catalyst inhibited gas and solid productions, and improved the liquid yield to nearly 10 wt%. Gasoline and light middle fractions continually increased as hydroprocessing extended to long time periods, which together with gas and solid products was associated to the depletion of heavy liquid fraction and vacuum residue (VR). The results indicate that heavy middle distillates and residue contribute significantly to gasoline production. The selectivity of the thermal process is oriented towards the production of gases, solids and gasoline.
