Ultramarine blue is an historically significant pigment with a favourable toxicity profile and a long history of use in sensitive applications such as cosmetics and food contact applications.A favourable toxicity profile is not however enough in today's market place as discerning customers practice sustainable procurement and look for products with a beneficial life cycle analysis.This paper will outline the results of a study commissioned by the world's leading ultramarine manufacturer.It will show how a commitment to sustainable manufacture is an essential addition to the favourable toxicity profile.Areas for improvement are recognised and options for renewable energy resources will be discussed.
