This paper deals with four topics, viz: (1) the phases in which sulfate can occur in Portland cements and clinkers and the rates at which they react; (2) experimental methods that provide information on how the sulfate is distributed between these phases in clinkers; (3) calculation of this distribution from the bulk composition of the clinker; and (4) claims that damage from DEF (delayed ettringite formation) can occur in concretes not exposed to an elevated temperature because of the amount or distribution of the sulfate between phases in the cement or clinker.
