摘要

Protection of medium voltage (MV) overhead lines against indirect effects of lightning is an important issue in Malaysia and tropical countries. In order to consider on the protection of MV line versus indirect effects of lightning, the electrical performance of a 10kV polymer insulator under different conditions for impulse, weather and insulator angle with respect to cross-arm were studied in this paper (both experimental and simulation) and the results were discussed accordingly. The results show that the weather and also insulator angle (with respect to cross-arm) are strongly affected on the values of breakdown voltage and leakage current in both negative and positive impulses. Therefore, in order to set a proper protection system on the MV lines against lightning induced voltage, consideration on the local information such as on weather, insulator angles with respect to cross-arm and other line parameters can be helpful in obtaining good results and thus to increase line's lightning performance.
