Automation needs and goals are tightly connected with the process objectives. This paper explores the competitive advantages of integrated process and control design. Design techniques for process stability and agility in the stock preparation, wet end, and dry end of the machine are discussed. Process stability refers to reduction of both MD and CD variations while process agility refers to faster and simpler process dynamics so that fast and effective quality changes are made possible. The development of non-scanning measurements imbedded into the process is also covered.
