FREENESS SOFT SENSOR IN TMP- REFINING

A study of the refined pulp quality control was started in 1998 at UPM-Kymmene Kaipola paper mill in Finland. Studied refiners were Metso Paper SD-65 including both main and reject refining. The comparison between relevant operation signals and process modeling resulted into a soft sensor for refined pulp freeness, which uses refiner specific energy consumption and segment vibration as measurements. Automatic model parameter adjustment and freeness quality control for the main line refining were developed in 2001. Alternative methods to measure the refiner segment vibration were studied also. The results of this study, the developed soft sensor system and the control benefits are presented in this paper.
