Utilisation of plastic wastes has been one of the most difficult problems that has recently appeared in dealing with wastes. The difficulties stem form a great diversity of plastics produced and their widespread use in practically all fields of industry. Consequently, a contribution of plastic waste in all kinds of wastes is very high and the packaging wastes make about 40 % of all plastic waste. Recently, the production, and hence the use, of plastic packaging has significantly increased. Apart from packaging there are other sources of plastic waste. At present in Poland the use of plastics is estimated as 1 million tons a year and sooner or later they will become waste so all kinds of activities aimed at utilisation of plastic waste are extremely important. In utilisation of municipal plastic waste, the main problem is the packaging plastic waste, therefore, much attention has been paid to solving the question of its utilisation. In proposing the methods for plastic utilisation, apart from the qualitative and quantitative characterisation of the most important streams of plastic waste, the availability of particular technologies of plastics processing, possible demand for the products proposed and legal and organisational demands have been taken into regard. According to the regulations, production of energy by direct combustion is not recognised as recycling. Therefore, the use of high calorific value plastics for production of PDF (plastic derived fuels) cannot be accepted as the fulfilment of the recycling obligations. The conception proposed by us permits utilisation of different kinds of plastics, does not need expensive and difficult methods of purification and saves raw materials as a result of reintroduction to the cycle of some significant amounts of petrochemical raw materials. The method proposed is based on co-distillation of waste petroleum oils together with plastic waste, which satisfies the demands of the legal regulations of utilisation of oils and plastics. The products obtained are practically no different from the typical raw materials used for fuel composition.
