THE COMPLETE DISPOSAL AND RECYCLING OF ILLEGALLY DUMPED HAZARDOUS WASTE

摘要

Japan's worst case of illegal dumping of industrial hazardous waste occurred on Teshima Island. This waste was mostly composed of shredder dust and soil contaminated by high concentrations of toxic heavy metals and dioxins. The total amount of waste was estimated at approximately 600,000 tons. At present, these wastes are being excavated and transported to Naoshima Island, near Teshima Island, and melted down to be transformed into slag at a new melting furnace with a capacity of 200 tons per day.The slag is reused as aggregate in concrete. Furthermore, heavy metals such as copper are recovered during this process.This paper introduces this large-scale quasi-national project with descriptions of each process step including excavation, transportation by ship, melting and slag recycling.
