Modification of cotton stalks to be used as ion-exchangers was investigated. Incorporation of phosphate, sulfonate and phosphosulfonate into cotton stalks, particle size less than 1.5 ml, increases its efficiency toward metal ion uptake. The sodium binding capacity of phosphosulfonated cotton stalks is higher than phosphorylated and sulfonated cotton stalks. The efficiency of the prepared ion exchangers toward metal ion adsorption (copper, nickel, strontium and arsenic) was examined. The effect of different variables e.g. metal ion concentration, pH, contact time and temperature on the efficiency of the prepared ion exchangers was also investigated. FTIR spectra of the prepared ion exchangers showed new absorption bands at 1200 and 960 cm{sup}(-1) of the C-O-P band as a result of phosphorylation and at 1400 and 820 cm{sup}(-1) corresponding to the sulfonate group C-O-S of the sulfonated cotton stalks.
