STRATEGIC DEMOLITION WASTE MANAGEMENT TOOL FOR SUSTAINABLE LAND DEVELOPMENT

Urban Renewal and Regeneration works typically generate large quantities of construction and demolition wastes. Considering it is possible to recycle more than 80% of demolition wastes from typical buildings, strategic waste management offers a significant opportunity to improve the sustainable development performance of the project, including both financial and local community benefits. Golder Associates have developed a strategic waste management tool that assists planners, developers and consultants in identifying mechanisms whereby the expected wastes generated can be handled and processed, either on site or in the local urban area, for use in the construction works. Starting with a prognosis of the demolition wastes expected, the strategic demolition waste management tool helps to identify demolition and recycling methods which will increase the recyclability of the wastes, taking financial, environmental, technical and social parameters into account. These results can lead to increased ecycled materials for use in the planned construction works as well as ways by which to build the requirements into the tender documents for the works.
