The ability to recycle waste containing metal in the form of spent catalysts is determined both by technical and economical limits. Generally, recycling processes are defined and optimized for specific types of raw materials, and therefore, changes in the composition of the raw materials may require corresponding adjustments to the processes. In particular as variations in the content of undesirable tramp elements in raw materials, such as phosphorous or sulphur, often lead to the technical limits of specific processes. Keeping the quality of secondary products at a constant level is a precondition of their competitiveness and it is therefore crucial to adapt the processes to the actual composition of raw materials, specifically taking economic aspects into consideration. When producing ferrovanadium from secondary raw materials, the question must be asked how best to counteract an increase of the phosphorous content in raw materials. Thermodynamic calculations and experimental research were used to show that the reaction of phosphorus depends on how slag is controlled.
