The recycling of mixtures of consumer plastics composed of polyethylene and polypropylene was studied in this work an extruder of simple thread. Mixtures with virgin resin were also appraised with the intention of comparing possible alterations. The polypropylene post-consumption used came from the packings of cigarette wallets and the polyethylene from the protection film of cardboard packings. These two types of plastics were chosen because they are in great amount in the residues generated in the municipal district of Santa Cruz do Sul. The samples were prepared in the composition of PE (90w%): PP (10 w%). The addition of a compatibilizer was evaluated in the mixtures with virgin resin as much as for those with post-consumption plastic. The traction tests accomplished showed that the addition of PP in the matrix of PE alters the properties of the mixture because the modulus of elasticity increased in relation to the PE. The addition of a compatibilizer caused an increase in the modulus of elasticity in both studied cases (samples with virgin resin and with recycled); however, a larger alteration is observed for the virgin resin.
