Ethernet Passive Optical Network(EPON) is one of the most promising fibre-based access techniques which has beenmore and more widely used in today's access networks. In this paper, we proposed to integrate WLAN technology withEPON to provide wireless service in EPON network. First of all, theoretical analysis is given to support the feasibility ofintegrating WLAN technology into EPON system. Then, the architecture of the integrated system is descried. The keypoint of the plan is that an integrated ONU and WLAN BS called ONU-WLAN AP is setup in the system instead of astandard ONU. This is also the main difference between proposed system and a normal EPON system. The ONU-WLANAP can provide both wired access and wireless access to the end users. System design and implementation is discussedin the following paragraph. Transmission experiments and results of the proposed plan are also described in this paper.The experimental results show that the average traffic throughput of the system could reach to approximate 20Mbps.Finally, conclusions are drawn out: The proposed system can work properly. The integrated system could be a cost-effective plan for broadband access network.
