Preparation and properties of EPDM/montmorillonite nanocomposites

Ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM)/organic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposite was prepared by a melt-mixed process. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron macros ropy (TEM) showed that the composite was a intercalation type. The influence of the OMMT amount on the mechanical properties, optical properties and hot-resistant properties were studied. The results showed that the tensile strength, elongation at break were reached 19.8 MPa and 540%, respectively, when the OMMT amount was 15 phr. The nanocomposite prepared by 2, 5-dimethyl-di(tert-butylperoxy)hexane was semi-transparent and the OMMT amount had little influence on the light transmission and the vulcanization properties. Otherwise, the glass transition temperature (T_g) and the decomposition temperature (T_d) were increased because of the nano-dispersion of the OMT in rubber metrix.
