With the changes in environmental regulations in the recent years, the performance requirements for materials used for the automobiles are becoming more and more demanding. New regulations related to LEV and other emission standards, require poly-meric materials used in fuel systems to have very low fuel permeability to reduce overall viehical emissions. Though fluoroelastomers are more permeation resis-tant to fuels than many materials, these new regula-tions are placing new demands on this class of poly-mers. In recent years, in order to reduce the amount of CO and CO2 emission, additives containing oxy-gen have been added to fuels. Currently, ethanol is the most common oxygen-containing additive used for fuel modification. Oxygen containing additives however, promote fuel permeability in fluoroelastomers.
