The need for the integrated consideration of machinery-structure interaction is illustrated by examples from the marine industry. Emphasis is put on the need for consideration of the relevant coupling phenomena in the associated calculations. Starting with a static example, the optimized alignment of main engines, predominantly dynamic coupling is dealt with. The influence of machinery-structure interaction on the effectiveness of vibration excitation forces as well as various examples for so called vibration resonators leading to vibration magnification or eventually to fatigue damage are described. Focus is put on the illustration of the underlying principles by presenting examples from calculation practice rather than on the theoretical background. Various components of the main propulsion machinery are treated, i.e. main engines, podded drives, shaft lines, gears and generator sets.
