CONTRIBUTION OF CEMENT PRODUCTION AND USE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Sustainable development has an ever growing impact on all parts of society. It covers environmental, economic and social aspects. The contributions of the cement industry to sustainable development are widespread and include raw material supply, clinker production and the use of blended cements. Far-sighted quarry management and the use of industrial by-products save resources and minimise the impact on the environment. While the thermal energy efficiency is already very high, greenhouse gas emissions can further be reduced by promoting the application of alternative fuels. Production and use of blended cements give a double chance: the reduction of resource and energy consumption during the production of cement and the increase in the choice between different cement types with respect to their performance characteristics well fitting to the intended use. Therefore both, the improvement of efficiency during cement production and the supply of variety of different cement types - composed of standardised constituents - contribute to sustainable developments. This contribution will give an overview of the corresponding state of the art on the basis of practical cases and examples.
