Successful economic molding of phenolic compounds depend on a number of factors to achieve quality functional molded end products. The design of the injection molds is the focal point where all production factors that make a successful product focus on. The part design contributes equally to the mold design. Factors such as press size and function; trained personnel, secondary part finishing or lack of, are but a few of the many compromises that are made in designing a mold. Certain basic mold design fundamentals are common regardless of the type of thermosetting materials. However, thermoset phenolics like many other materials have their own special characteristics that are important and require design differences. All the aspects of mold design would be impossible to cover in the limited time available, so emphasis will be placed on the relationship of basic mold design and the affect of phenolic compound temperature control.
