The use of suction piles as a foundation option for small subsea protection structures founded in soft cohesive deposits can prove a viable foundation option. However, the absence of industry generic design guidelines from which to form a basis of design for suction piles allows the design to be open to interpretation and subjective to engineering judgement. Many approaches in the past have relied heavily on detailed FEA and required expert input. The approach presented illustrates how conventional industry standard structural analysis software may be utilised. With careful consideration and modification of model parameters this software can be used to effectively model soil structure interaction and obtain foundation loads and displacement required for the design. In addition, some of the other design aspects that are essential to suction pile design are considered and analysis methods presented.
