Semi-analytical infinite element for three-dimensional finite-element analysis

A method for modelling three-dimensional soil-structure interaction problems is presented, in which the unbounded soil domain is treated accurately and efficiently. The method combines conventional three-dimensional finite-elements in a bounded region near the load-medium interface, allowing general loading and non-linear material behaviour to be modelled, with the novel semi-analytical the scaled boundary finite-element method, which accurately satisfies the virtual work requirement in the far field. It is shown that by using the scaled boundary finite-element method to model the far field a dramatic improvement in the accuracy of the elastic solution can be obtain with only a small increase in the number of degrees of freedom in the overall problem. It is also shown that only certain terms in the Fourier series, which reflect the geometry of the problem, will contribute to the overall solution, and only those terms need to be included.
