摘要

This study is located in the Tarim Basin of southern part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Owing to the special landform of the basin, it is considered as one of the most representative regions of arid and semi-arid lands on the globe. More and more scientists have focused on its land-use and land-cover change. Expanding oases, soil salinization and dying poplar forests are the major changes in this region over the past forty years. Therefore to investigate the reasonable causes and consequences for above three factors, post-classification comparison change detection, which was considered as one of the most effective methods among change detection techniques, was carried out between two satellite images of Landsat ETM in 2000 and Corona panchromatic in 1964. This paper is also concerned with the exact selection of experimental sites in this critical region by individually designing several comparable areas for the corresponding research purpose aimed at extracting human-induced impacts from naturally formed factors. In order to have a general understanding of this region, relative researches such as climate change as well as socioeconomic evolution is also discussed.
