Three-dimensional simulations of initiation of detonation in covered Composition B caused by the impact of steel cylinders, cubes, and spheres were performed using CTH and its History Variable Reactive Burn model. The critical cover thickness required to suppress detonation was found to be sensitive to the impact orientation. A cylindrical arrangement giving results equivalent to the cube was found. An equivalent sphere was found to be too massive. The results were used to influence testing protocol recommendations for insensitive munitions.
