Pre-dispersed pigments (PDP) for the manufacture of quality custom color concentrates offer a multitude of technical advantages as compared to processing dry powder pigments. Advantages of processing pre-dispersed pigments as intermediates in the manufacture of plastic color concentrates are linked to color value retention, consistent pigment loads, faster production rates, and safer work atmospheres due to its dust free form. Colored film, fiber, molding, and compounding production historically demonstrates superior quality plastic pigment dispersions. The following paper will focus on the technical attributes of PDP. Included will be quality assurance data with appropriate test methods to show how these concentrates offer the same color pigment values. Proprietary equipment technology by custom manufactured equipment and a newly designed process allow the PDP to be manufactured as completely dispersed pigment concentrates. In the past, dispersion was achieved using polyethylene low molecular weight polymer matrix. This new technology takes a polymeric matrix and allows a 50% organic pigment concentration and a 74% inorganic pigment concentration.
