Pressure control circuit is used very widely in hydraulic transmission systems. Hydraulic relief valve is necessary to regulate the pressure in the pressure control system. The characteristics of relief valve affect the performance of the hydraulic pressure control system greatly. Traditional hydraulic relief valve has a complex construction and its moving part, such as the spring, often breaks down during work. Magnet-rheological fluid (MR fluid) is a class of smart material whose rheological properties may be rapidly varied by the application of a magnetic field. Using this rheological property, a new type relief valve is developed and the pressure control circuit using this kind of relief valve and magneto-rheological fluid is studied in this paper. Using the rheological property of MR fluid, the new type MR fluid relief valve can be designed absence of moving parts and can be adjusted electrically. So the circuit has a long life and can be controlled in automatic method. The construction and working principle of new type valve and circuit are introduced. Their steady-state performance is simulated and experimented.
