Reduction of Vibration and Noise Produced by Nuclear Turbine Control Valves

High-frequency pulsation of the steam flow and vibration of piping system was discovered during test period of 1000 MW SKODA turbine operating with inlet-saturated steam in nuclear power plant Temelin. Control valves and piping system radiated high-power noise. The only possible way of pulsating flows reduction was to change the geometry of inner channels of control valves. Several variants of valve channel geometry were tested. Main attention was given to the variant with flat-bottom-plug and perforated ring called "muffler". The new designs are compared in the paper with the original one by field turbine measurements, by numerical simulations and by model experiments. Mach number and velocity distribution in valve channels and diffuser and also pressure pulsation characteristics of steam flow in inlet pipes, noise generation and piping vibration are described for the wide range of turbine-output.
