eebuildings: Sharing Lessons From the US Energy Star Program in China

This presentation will summarize efforts by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assist building owners and managers in China to improve the energy efficiency of commercial buildings through the eeBuildings program, which draws primarily on domestic experience that EPA has gained in developing Energy Star. The eeBuildings program is built on fieldwork supported by a newly developed Web site that provides access to the national building energy performance benchmarking tool and other tools and resources. Currently, the eeBuildings program is focused on commercial office buildings in Shanghai and, as an US EPA-sponsored program, is completely free and voluntary. The lessons from Energy Star shared in Shanghai are based on developing a better understanding about how buildings are operated. The energy performance benchmarking tool allows buildings owners and managers to get an idea of how their buildings' energy performance compares to similar buildings in the US; in time, participants will get an idea of how their buildings compare to similar buildings in China as the pool of benchmarked buildings grows. Owners and managers with large portfolios of buildings will be able to rank buildings by energy efficiency and prioritize which ones offer the best opportunities for high returns from energy efficiency measures. eeBuildings will soon be offering seminars to building owners and managers that focuses on optimizing operations by taking advantage of building management systems. For buildings that require new equipment to be more efficient, eeBuildings will be organizing training and preparing guides to help Chinese buildings owners navigate the budding Performance Contracting industry in Shanghai. Session attendees will be able to participate in eeBuildings or Energy Star following the session. Programmatic offerings will equip building owners and operators to make informed decisions that will improve their performance and make a lasting impact on their bottom line.
