Electrical Submersible Pumps: An Overview of Growth and Capabilities in Geothermal Applications

Electrical submersible pump (ESP) systems, developed primarily for applications in the oil and gas industry, are aptly suited to handle challenges that are presented in low enthalpy geothermal wells. Specific benefits include the ability to pump water at high flowrates, the possibility of deep system setting depths, and placement in deviated wells. Geothermal applications can be extremely harsh in both temperature and fluid composition. Baker Hughes, a GE company (BHGE), has developed a portfolio of ESPs capable of operating in these conditions and producing the volumes of fluid required by operators. A broad platform of knowledge exists in the petroleum industry that is transferable to geothermal applications. However, as oil and gas operators begin to invest into renewable technology, unique challenges arise, prompting innovation. Application of the BHGE high-temperature ESPs in geothermal wells has proven to be successful and profitable to our customers.
