As the Internet has gained popularity, the need for network security has become a major issue for all organizations that deal with information processing systems. Unfortunately, on most college campuses, the security of information systems is not a high priority. This leaves the information systems and network facilities vulnerable to attacks from both outside and within the organization. This study identifies the security requirements that are essential to the information systems of universities and reviews the security features of available products based on the identified requirements. The security requirements are classified as perimeter protection, authentication and encryption, desktop protection, management tools, and application level security. The features of each security product is reviewed to identify those products that are most feasible to meet the security requirements of university environments.
