High Density DC/DC Conversion Offers Various Customer Benefits

The computing power of microprocessors has been increasing rapidly. At the same time, their power consumption has been growing, resulting in a higher demand for high-efficiency dc/dc converters in motherboard and server systems. So far, the active components of these systems such as gate drivers, MOSFETs, and controllers have been mainly discrete devices. Fully discrete solutions, however, are associated with a number of disadvantages such as higher design effort, increased layout parasitics, and other factors related to cost and board-space considerations. In this paper, a novel integration concept for dc/dc converters is outlined. Two power MOSFETs have been integrated with a gate driver to form the basis of a dc/dc power supply in buck-converter topology. The concept has been realized in the Infineon TDA21201 and tested in a demonstration board. Various measurements, shown in this article, have been carried out to show the customer benefits of the concept.
