Codes, Standards, Recommended Practices, and Guides of Engineering Scientific Professional Societies: Application to Verification Validation in Computational Engineering

A review of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited standards organizations with activities in the area of verification and validation (V&V) for engineering computations was performed. The primary organization are: American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA); American Nuclear Society; American Society of Mechanics Engineers; European Research Community On Flow, Turbulence And Combustion (EUROFAC) The pursuit of standards for V&V of engineering computations can perhaps be described as still in a conceptualization stage, i.e. standards have not yet been proposed. The present focus is on the predecessors of standards, viz. recommended practices and guides, with an emphasis on the more general guides. This manuscript provides an overview of the professional society standards organizations and procedures. The various forms of documents: Codes, Standards, Recommended Practices, and Guides, associated with standards development are defined and differentiated.
