Brominated flame-retardants are known for their very efficient role in saving lives and property due to their optimal combination of properties. They are found in many places in our daily lives and they are vital to the modern electronics, building and automotive industries. The rapid developments in these industries is making them very demanding with regard to plastics properties and costs. Higher processing temperatures and high flow during molding to reduce production cost, good compromise between impact and stiffness as well as tolerance to high temperature of use are some of the requirements for the plastic parts used in their production. Corrosion resistance of plastics during molding and use has become a key factor for such high demanding applications. Existing and recently introduced brominated flame-retardants that are essential for these types of application have been investigated with regard to their contribution to corrosion resistance. This paper will review some applications where aromatic brominated flame-retardants systems have been developed to contribute to good corrosion resistance of thermoplastics for engineering applications. In another case, it will be shown how to improve significantly corrosion resistance of aliphatic brominated flame-retardants.
