Field measurements on the pullout capacity of a gravity-type concrete block anchor and a suction anchor were conducted on the soft mud seabed located in Tokyo Bay. The influence of seabed sediment on the pullout capacity of mooring anchors was examined for the soft mud in Tokyo Bay and compared with the silty sand in Maizuru Bay (Maeno et al., 2001). The breakout factor, which is defined as the ratio of the ultimate pullout capacity to the submerged weight of removed soil, was introduced to examine how the following factors affected the pullout capacity of the anchors: (1) The pressures both on the inside of the suction anchor and at the bottom of the block anchor; (2) The relative penetration depth (d/H); (3) The loading inclination.
