The governing equations for the kinematic and dynamic analysis of a half-toroidal traction drive speed variator are derived. In addition, equations defining a speed ratio control system with trunnion position feedback using a cam-follower system are also derived. This control system includes numerous hydraulic and mechanical elements. The entire set of system equations is used in a computer simulation developed in Matrix-X. The simulation predicts system behavior during ratio transients. Selected open-loop and closed-loop simulation results are presented to demonstrate system dynamic behavior during speed ratio changes.
