Liquid- Liquid Extraction Of Thorium (Ⅳ) and Uranium (Ⅵ) With Binary Mixtures

The solvent extraction of thorium (Ⅳ) and uranium (Ⅵ) has been studied by using mixtures of various commercial extractants such as PC88A, Aliquat 336 and TOPO from different aqueous acid media. Synergistic effect is observed in the extraction of thorium (Ⅳ) by mixture of PC88A (2-ethylhexyl - phosphonic acid-mono- 2- ethylhexyl ester) & TOPO (tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide) in kerosene from HClO_4 and HNO_3 media. Antagonism is however, observed in the same system in case of H_2SO_4 (aq) media. The effect of various diluents on these mixed systems has also been studied. Extraction of uranium (Ⅵ) with binary mixtures of Aliquat 336 (Methyl tricapryl ammonium chloride) and PC88A has been studied from HCl(aq), H_3PO_4 (aq) media. Synergism is observed in case of H_3PO_4 (aq) media whereas antagonistic effect results in aqueous HCl media.
