Velocity measurements are conducted in rectangular embayments attached to a straight open channel. The measurements were carried out both in a real river and in a laboratory flume. The large-scale PIV (LSPIV) method was adopted for the field measurements, whereas point velocities were obtained by a 2-D electromagnet current meter (ECM) in the laboratory measurements. Large-scale circulation flow induced in the embayments is the main concern. The scale effect on the flow behaviour is also discussed.
