NOVEL NEW REINFORCING COMPONENTS FOR COMPOSITE BEAMS

Several novel new reinforcing components have been developed in Australia to improve detailing of the shear connection in composite beams. By using these components: unsatisfactory failure modes are suppressed; the amount of reinforcement required for longitudinal shear resistance is significantly reduced compared with conventional detailing; design is simplified; and installation of reinforcement on site is much easier and faster. Rules developed for design engineers to detail beams incorporating the new products are described in detail in the paper. One type of component has been developed to prevent a special type of longitudinal shear failure from occurring in the concrete flange of secondary composite edge beams when profiled steel sheeting is laid transverse to the longitudinal axis of the steel beam. It is now mandatory in Australian Standard AS 2327.1 "Simply-Supported Composite Beams" to provide reinforcement for this purpose. A method for designing this reinforcement is proposed for the first time. Another type of component was developed to prevent a similar type of longitudinal shear failure in primary composite beams with widely-spaced shear connectors. A further two types of components have been developed for use in any primary and secondary composite internal or edge beams where the other types of components are not required. All the components can be used in either continuous or simply-supported composite beams, as described in the paper.
