Anther-cultured pure lines of 'Fuji' apple: growing and fruiting characteristics and application values in breeding

Growth characteristics and fruit quality of 'Fuji' apple anther-cultured pure lines(FPL) were investigated, analyzed and evaluated. The length of new shoots, thickness of trunks, and fruit quality of FPL were obviously better than that of the control ('Nagatomi-2'). The fruit weight, soluble solids and firmness reached the top class, indicating that the FPL were of significant value for improvement of apple varieties. Shoots of FPL were irradiated with ~(60)Coγ-ray and one bud-mutated spur variety was obtained. Crossing between 'Fuji' pure lines and 'Delicious' pure lines as well as 'Golden Delicious' was conducted. The progenies presented a wide diversity in leaf shape and shoot color. Further investigation is in progress.
