ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATIONS (EPDS): WHATS IN IT FOR STEEL?

This paper deals with the rapidly developing field of environmental product declarations (EPDs) and environmental assessments of buildings in the construction sector. There are many initiatives, particularly in the construction sector, without much coordination and standardisation. Steel industry is not heavily involved in these initiatives until now. The reputation of steel industry is at stake as other construction sectors put significant efforts in EPD activities. Main recommendations for steel industry are (i) to build up capacity by experimenting at company level with EPDs and building assessment calculations, (ii) to strive at a policy level for an international harmonisation of different initiatives, and (iii) to integrate in the longer term the EPD-activities into the normal business activities around product stewardship and corporate sustainability.
