To ensure future business success, forward-looking companies need to be in a position to support customers and markets as they start to embrace the concepts of sustainable development. It is therefore important that individual market sectors should develop their own strategy to support the companies within their sector, thereby ensuring a co-ordinated approach for that grouping. Working to guidelines set by the UK government-sponsored Pioneers Group and the UK Sustainable Development Commission (SDC), the steel construction sector has initiated an evolutionary strategy that will encompass both its member companies and stakeholders. The existing Steel Sector Committee for Sustainable Construction (SSCSC) has co-ordinated the ideas of the major players. The key members of that group who were involved with strategy development were Corus, the Steel Construction Institute (SCI) and the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA). The approach of SSCSC has been to understand the general principles of Sustainable Development, review the current status of the sector with respect to Sustainability and then, through scenario planning, to develop sustainability ideas and concepts by involving stakeholders in the deliberations. From these discussions, SSCSC has developed key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that are 'core' to the sector. Targets and improvement plans have been set and the application of the strategy has been illustrated by examples of sustainable steel construction.
