The use of Lightweight Steel Framing (LSF) for new residential construction continues to grow at a modest pace in Canada. The steel industry has developed strategies to achieve a goal of approximately 3 million tons shipped for use in new residential housing starts. The strategies surround Infrastructure Development, Advancement of Technology and Promotion. Activities undertaken by Dofasco Inc. and other members of the steel industry to support these strategies will be discussed, particularly those projects in the area of Advancement of Technology. This includes Fire and Acoustic testing and modelling, code development, durability performance, thermal performance and vibration performance as well as structural optimisation. To date there has been steady growth of LSF use in Canada for domestic and export opportunities. This growth is directly attributable to the activities being described. The future of LSF depends on the successful completion of these activities and continued support by the steel industry.
