An integrated back injury prevention programme was put in place in 3 nursing homes. The programme comprised various strategies based on both management and care issues. Outcome measurements included care plan details, staff perception of their health, and exposure to manual handling risk. The results indicate that an integrated approach to the prevention of musculo-skeletal pain amongst nursing home staff is essential. Staff exposure to manual handling risk decreased at stage 2 due to risk management and problem solving interventions only. The decrease continued to stage 3 with new equipment and training interventions. No major changes in staff health perception were recorded, perhaps due to the brief time between completing all the interventions and measuring the outcome. A further period of time is needed to fully assess the effects of the project interventions.
