Establishing reliability for data extraction in a systematic review on patient handling

This paper describes the development and testing of a data appraisal/extraction tool for use in a systematic review on patient handling (Hignett et al, 2002a). Prior to the main review an inter-rater reliability exercise was carried out. Statistical analysis of the results showed good inter-rater reliability for the overall quality score and so the tool will now be applied, with confidence, to the full systematic review.
