The time-varying Na D line emission was observed at Crimean Astrophysical Observatory on 20 July 1994 when Q fragment of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 passed through the inner magnetosphere at a distance of about 3 Jovian radii. For explanation of observed luminosity we calculated the emission in D_1, D_2 lines of Na I for the case of resonance scattering of the solar radiation. Two-level model of Na I atom was adopted and the effects of multiple diffusion have been accounted for. The amount of Na atoms along the line of sight was found to be 1.4·10~(13) or 6·10~(15) atom-cm~(-2) depending on parameters of computation.
