Along with the introduction of new building materials like high performance concrete (HPC) there has been a regression in building new structures and the maintenance of older concrete structures became increasingly important in the recent decade. Either for strengthening structures or to preserve historical buildings ― later applied concrete usually forms the basis of strengthening or redesign. To use HPC and its advantages for strengthening, the crucial function of a shear joint between old and new concrete has to be observed.
