We have demonstrated transmission of forty 100-GHz spaced, 40-Gb/s NRZ channels over 500 km of TrueWave-RS fiber with 100-km amplified spans without any per-band or per-channel dispersion correction. Bit error rates below 2.4 /spl times/ 10/sup -11/ are achieved for all forty C-band WDM channels. This result is achieved using hybrid Raman/EDFA amplification with a single-wavelength Raman pump and slope-matched dispersion-compensating modules. No for-ward error correction techniques are employed. The extra-high-slope dispersion-compensating fiber provides superb dispersion and dispersion-slope compensation over the entire C-band and effectively reduces the residual dispersion variation to /spl plusmn/0.038 ps/(nm-km).
